Strong thunderstorms packing hail, damaging wind and torrential rain developed from the Great Lakes to the southern Plains and into the Ohio and Tennessee valleys. Wind damaged house roofs near Waxahachie, Tex., and toppled trees and power lines in Ellis County, Tex. The National Weather Service said a tornado touched down near Manchester, Iowa, but no damage was reported. Hail the size of marbles pelted parts of northern Alabama and Iowa.
