In Kobe, Japan, Jon Sieben, Olympic champion in the men’s 200-meter butterfly, beat Matt Biondi of the United States by a fraction of a second in the 100-meter butterfly, giving Australia its first medal of the 1985 World University Games.

Michael Gross of West Germany, Olympic champion and world record-holder in the event, finished third.

Sieben was timed in 53.97 seconds, 0.06 seconds ahead of Biondi. Gross was timed in 54.16.

Bulgaria and Brazil also won their first golds of the meet, and Conny van Bentum of the Netherlands won her second.

Van Bentum, who won the 100-meter freestyle Sunday, won the women’s 200-meter freestyle in 2:00.34, beating Mary T. Meagher of Louisville, Ky., who finished in 2:01.64. Both bettered the meet record of 2:02.17.
