Floods in China Leave 200 Dead, Maroon Thousands
Floods in northeast and southern China have killed more than 200 people and trapped nearly half a million others, press reports said last week.
The official China Daily said more than 180 people died in the northeast and that the town of Panjin was threatened. It said 430,000 people were marooned.
On the coast of southern China, at least 26 people were killed and about 120 missing in floods caused by heavy rain on the Leizhou peninsula, the China News Service reported.
The news agency said 30 warships and 500 troops have been sent to the area to rescue 50,000 people.
China Daily quoted officials in northeast China as saying the town of Panjin is under direct threat and that the priority is to save the Liaoning province fertilizer plant in the town and the nearby Liaohe oil field. These must be saved, “otherwise the losses will be disastrous,” it said.
