Construction is expected to start late this year on a $65-million, 400-room luxury resort to be developed in Indian Wells by Stouffer Hotel Co. and Daon Corp.

Stouffer will operate the resort to be constructed on California 111 about 13 miles southeast of Palm Springs. Completion is scheduled for the fall of 1987, and the complex is being built on land owned by Stouffer and Daon.

Designed by the San Francisco architectural firm of Hornberger Worstell & Associates, the Stouffer Indian Wells Resort will be within a 36-hole golf complex created by golf course designer Ted Robinson. Other amenities include 10 outdoor tennis courts, a swimming pool, a health club and two restaurants.

Meeting space will total 33,000 square feet and will include two ballrooms of 15,000 and 6,000 square feet.

The resort will be the second Stouffer property in California; an $83-million, 750-room hotel will open at Los Angeles International Airport next spring.

Stouffer, based in Solon, Ohio, near Cleveland, owns or operates 22 hotels from Boston to Hawaii and plans to have 50 in operation by the end of the decade, according to William N. Hulett, the firm’s president.

Daon is an international real estate investment and development company based in Vancouver, with U. S. headquarters in Newport Beach.
