Rival gunmen battled in the streets of Beirut, and Christian and Muslim leaders met with Syrian officials to discuss ways of ending Lebanon’s long civil strife. The clashes, with rocket-propelled grenades and automatic weapons, erupted between the Druze Progressive Socialist Party and the secular Syrian National Social Party. The shooting was reportedly ended by the intervention of Syrian truce observers. In Damascus, Nabih Berri, leader of the Shia Muslim militia Amal, discussed a peace proposal with Syrian officials, and Christian Falangist leaders ended two days of talks with Syrian Vice President Abdel-Halim Khaddam.
