The National Safety Council said Tuesday that 439 persons died in traffic accidents during the three-day Labor Day weekend.

Before the weekend began, the council said that between 450 and 550 persons could die in traffic accidents between 6 p.m. Friday and midnight local time Monday. About 400 persons could be expected to die in traffic accidents during a three-day, non-holiday weekend this time of year, officials said. Last year’s Labor Day weekend toll was 441.
