Big Retailers Report Sales Gain

Retail sales picked up a bit in August, the nation’s major retailers reported today. Sears, Roebuck & Co., the country’s largest retailer, said its sales for the four weeks ending Aug. 31 edged up 1.4% from the same period a year ago.
No. 2 K mart Corp. said its sales increased 6.1%, but sales for stores open more than a year, called same-store sales, fell 1.6%. J. C. Penney Co., ranked third, said its sales rose 2.3%.
