Youth With AIDS Allowed in School in Massachusetts
School officials said Thursday that they are allowing a teen-age boy with AIDS to attend junior high school because it’s “the right thing to do.”
School Supt. John McCarthy said that the student, who was not identified to protect his privacy, has been attending Case Junior High School since Aug. 27.
Meanwhile, in Kokomo, Ind., doctors said Thursday that the condition of Ryan White, a 13-year-old AIDS victim, has improved. The boy, a hemophiliac who has been barred from attending school because of his affliction, was hospitalized Monday with an undisclosed ailment.
His condition was upgraded to good Wednesday, and doctors said he would be well enough to go home today.
The Swansea student, who contracted the disease as a result of treatment for hemophilia, as did the Kokomo boy, was admitted to school “because it is the right thing to do,” McCarthy said, adding that there has been no clamor for the youngster’s ouster from school.
