New ‘Mercy Killer’ Appeal in Fla.
Gov. Bob Graham today asked the Florida Cabinet to reconsider granting clemency to convicted “mercy killer” Roswell Gilbert, whose bid for release on appeal failed two weeks ago.
Gilbert, a 76-year-old retired Fort Lauderdale engineer, was convicted May 9 of shooting his wife, Emily, who suffered from Alzheimer’s disease and osteoporosis, a painful, degenerative bone ailment. Gilbert said he shot his wife of 51 years twice in the head to end her suffering. Prosecutors contended that Gilbert killed her because she had become a burden to him.
