Postal Rates to Rise 41% for Charitable, Church Publications : Subsidy Cuts Blamed for Postal Rate Hike of 41% for Church, Charitable Publications
Rates for mailing church bulletins, charitable solicitations and certain newspapers will increase by up to 41% on Oct. 1, the Postal Service Board of Governors decided Friday.
Free mail for the blind will be maintained.
The rate increases were made necessary by legislation limiting the amount Congress was willing to spend to subsidize these mailings, officials said.
The board expressed a willingness to reconsider the increase if Congress increases the $749 million it plans to spend subsidizing these mailings in the 1986 fiscal year.
