U.S. to Help Repair Mozambique Railway
The United States will donate $5 million to help restore a rail line between the Mozambique port of Beira and eastern Zimbabwe.
The 150-mile line, Zimbabwe’s shortest trade route to the Indian Ocean, is in poor condition after years of neglect because of rightist guerrilla activity. It can carry only light traffic.
The agreement provides that the aid will be used to renovate engines, repair rails and send Mozambicans to Zimbabwe for training. U.S. ties with the Marxist government of Mozambique have improved in the last two years, and Washington is now one of this country’s biggest aid donors. Mozambican President Samora Machel will make a weeklong official visit to the United States beginning Sept. 17.
