Brea : Bank Plans to Apply to County for Helipad

Security Pacific Bank, which was denied permission by city officials to fly helicopters from its bank operations center in Brea, now plans to apply to the county to build a new helipad, officials said Monday.

One site under consideration is the Olinda landfill, bank senior vice president Susan Taha confirmed Monday, but she declined to name other possible sites.

“We’re just in the discussion stage with the county,” Taha said.

Brea officials last month denied the bank use of a helipad built atop its building at 275 S. Valencia Ave. after vehement opposition from residents concerned with potential noise problems and depreciation of property values. Bank officials, however, said the helicopters would not fly directly over homes and offered to reduce flights from 10 to five daily.

By presenting its new proposal to the county Waste Management Board, Security Pacific is “trying to bypass Brea--that is obvious,” Mayor Pro Tem Sam Cooper said. “I think they are making a serious mistake.”

City officials plan to discuss the matter during today’s council meeting, Cooper said.
