The City Council decided this week to continue a subsidy for student RTD bus passes until Dec. 31. After the bus system raised the price of a monthly pass on July 1, the council approved a subsidy to keep the old price in August and September.

The price for elementary and secondary students had been raised to $12; for college and vocational students, the new price of a monthly pass went to $15.

Three Hawthorne students took advantage of the subsidy in August and 16 in September, according to Howard Wohlner, city treasurer.

Students who wish to get the cheaper rate must bring proof of Hawthorne residency and their RTD pass to City Hall, where they can purchase a monthly sticker for $4.

The city government also sells monthly bus-pass stickers at the $4 rate to Hawthorne residents who are elderly or handicapped. The subsidy for the elderly and handicapped, which began after the RTD raised the price of monthly passes from $4 to $7, will be continued indefinitely, city officials said.
