The European Parliament, the legislative branch of the European Community, appealed to Pakistan’s government Thursday “as a matter of urgency” to release opposition leader Benazir Bhutto from house arrest.

Bhutto, 33, who had been in self-imposed exile since 1983, returned to Pakistan in August to attend her brother’s funeral. She has been under house arrest since Aug. 27.

She is the daughter of former Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, who was executed in 1979 after a military coup. She is the leader of the outlawed Pakistan People’s Party.
