The State Department expressed displeasure Thursday over South Africa’s decision to expel Newsweek correspondent Ray Wilkinson.

“To the extent that press freedom is curtailed anywhere, the United States can only be displeased,” department spokesman Bernard Kalb said. “Our concerns have been made clear to the South African government.”

The South African government accused Wilkinson of engaging in “distortions” and “unfair reportage.”
