Portland State Upsets Trojans in Volleyball
Portland State upset USC, the nation’s No. 1-ranked team, in the first round of the Titan Collegiate Volleyball Tournament Friday, and then went on to defeat Fresno State and Loyola on the first day of competition at Cal State Fullerton.
After sweeping the Trojans, 15-11, 15-5, the Vikings beat Fresno State, 15-11, 15-11, and Loyola, 15-12, 15-5. Other unbeaten teams after the first day are UC Santa Barbara, which swept Utah State, Sacramento State and Arizona, and No. 9 San Diego State, which defeated UC Riverside, Oregon State and Santa Clara.
Cal State Fullerton defeated Pepperdine, but was eliminated after losing to Cal Poly Pomona and Rhode Island.
The championship bracket teams are Portland State, USC, San Diego State, UC Riverside, Cal Poly Pomona, Rhode Island, UC Santa Barbara and Arizona. The consolation bracket begins at 9 a.m. today at Titan Gym, and the championship match will start at 7:30 p.m.
In other volleyball action:
The Chapman College women’s volleyball team won four matches Friday to advance to today’s final round of the UC San Diego Tournament.
The Panthers defeated Indiana-Purdue, 15-4, 15-10; LaVerne, 15-7, 15-4; Azusa-Pacific, 15-5, 13-15, 15-7; and Cal Lutheran, 12-15, 15-8, 15-11.
Chapman, which plays Westmont today, is 5-0.
