Atty. Gen. Edwin Meese III today unveiled a wide-ranging legislative proposal to combat white-collar crime by improving prosecution of firms and individuals that overcharge the government for goods and services.

The eight-point program is aimed in large part at defense procurement fraud, Meese told a news conference. “We believe these bills are the most important legislative initiative Congress could enact to reform the procurement process and reinforce the government’s efforts to prevent waste, fraud and abuse in federal programs,” he said.
