A 17-year-old girl was raped during a weekend concert at Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre not more than 30 feet from where at least 50 people sat, a police spokesman said.
The victim, a resident of Orange, was taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana where she was treated and released after the Saturday night attack, Irvine Police Sgt. Jim Broomfield said.
According to a police report, the girl was returning from the restroom during a concert of the new wave group, X, when she was accosted by a muscular man with a punk rock haircut.
The attacker allegedly forced the girl at knifepoint into a seat at the back of the arena and raped her, Broomfield said.
The police spokesman said he did not know why the 50 to 100 people sitting near the section where the girl was raped did not try to stop the attack or summon help.
Security guards later chased the assailant but lost him in the crowd of 6,200 spectators, Broomfield said.
