Pittsburgh Pirate Manager Chuck Tanner, former team captain Willie Stargell, and St. Louis Cardinal pitcher Joaquin Andujar are expected to be the first defense witnesses today in the trial of the Philadelphia caterer accused of dealing cocaine to major league baseball players.

Tanner, who has said he was unaware of the allegedly widespread use of cocaine on his team several years ago, will be the leadoff witness, defense attorney Adam O. Renfroe Jr. said.

U.S. Attorney J. Alan Johnson rested the government’s case against Curtis Strong and dropped two of 16 counts against the former clubhouse cook for the Philadelphia Phillies because of a lack of testimony concerning those charges.
