Jeffrey Jones has been found mentally unfit to stand trial in Sacramento for bludgeoning two men to death in rest rooms in January. Superior Court Judge Benjamin Diaz ruled that Jones, 25, could understand the charges, but could not rationally assist his lawyers. Diaz said he had a suspicion that Jones was malingering and was willfully refusing to cooperate with his lawyers. But he said he could not ignore the testimony of psychiatrists, who said Jones was mentally incompetent. Diaz is expected to order Jones to Atascadero State Hospital on Oct. 1. Jones is accused of killing Dr. Michael Corbett, 35, at University Medical Center, and Harry Dong, 46, at Sutter’s Fort. Yolo County authorities said Jones also is suspected of killing Fred Morris, 34, a UC Davis physics lecturer, but said he will not be prosecuted in that crime until the Sacramento cases are resolved.
