Dr. Paul M. Gertman, chief scientist of the Health Data Institute in Massachusetts, has been named vice chairman of Caremark, Inc., the Newport Beach-based company that specializes in home health care services for the seriously and chronically ill. Gertman, 43, is an adjunct professor at Boston University’s School of Medicine and the former research director for the President’s Advisory Council on Management Improvement.

Company officials said that Gertman will continue in his role as chief scientist of Caremark-owned Health Data Institute, but will assume the additional responsibility of talking to business leaders and the health care industry about the need for large corporations and insurance carriers to manage rising health care costs.

Caremark also announced the promotion of David Rosenbloom from vice president to president of Health Data Institute. Before joining the company two years ago, Rosenbloom, 41, was Commissioner of Health and Hospitals for Boston.
