Homeowners north of the Wrigley District, who one year ago vigorously protested a proposal to build a 160-unit apartment building in their neighborhood, were rewarded last week when the Planning Commission approved a 23-unit housing tract instead.

The single-family houses are expected to range in price from $110,000 to $129,000 and will go on sale early next year, said Bruce Bornemann, a spokesman for Santa Monica developer Roland Spongberg.

The site, west of Golden Avenue and north of Wardlow Road, is bounded on the west by the Los Angeles River, horse stables and a waste oil separation sump. Housing tracts surround the vacant area on the other three sides.
