New Zealand’s deputy prime minister met in Washington with top Administration leaders to discuss repairing the rift caused by his country’s anti-nuclear policies, but the Pentagon and State Department later said nothing was resolved. Geoffrey Palmer met with both Defense Secretary Caspar W. Weinberger and Secretary of State George P. Shultz to discuss a compromise on New Zealand’s refusal to allow port visits by U.S. Navy ships without a guarantee that they are not carrying nuclear weapons.
