Lewin Resigns Post at Hilton

Henri Lewin has resigned as head of Nevada hotel-casino operations for Hilton Hotels, the company said Friday. Lewin said he regrets that he had been an “obstacle” in the Beverly Hills-based company’s unsuccessful effort to get a New Jersey casino license early this year.
Although Lewin had been involved in controversy before the New Jersey proceedings, the company had retained him in one of its highest positions. He joined the company in 1964, during the reign of founder Conrad Hilton, and achieved higher status under current Chairman Barron Hilton.
John Giovenco has been assigned to head the Nevada operations. He will remain chief financial officer and a corporate director.
The New Jersey Casino Control Commission singled out Lewin in its hearings because of a 1977 company report on an internal probe of his associations and practices while managing the San Francisco Hilton.
Lewin told Barron Hilton in a resignation letter that the Atlantic City, N.J., experience had destroyed his feeling that “right will prevail” and had been “traumatic” to his health.
In a letter to the commission, Lewin said that he was not guilty of any wrongdoing and that he hoped that the agency would acknowledge that some day.
