Income of 714 Magazine’s Readers

I read with interest the statements attributed to Seth Baker, chairman of Baker Communications (Sept. 4), regarding the demographics of the households that receive his magazine, Newport Beach 714.

The Times reports: “A recent demographic survey of his . . . readers--residents from Huntington Beach to North Laguna--showed that . . . 46% have an income of more than $100,000 a year.” Baker claims 50,000 distribution.

I find this interesting because, according to the 1980 census, only 63,152 households in all of Orange County earned more than $50,000 annually.

The most accurate studies we’ve seen show that only about 18,000 earned $75,000-plus a year at that time, and currently less than 9,000 households earn $100,000 a year or more, countywide.
