A monthlong Soviet and Afghan offensive against Muslim rebels near the border with Pakistan appeared to be ending. Both sides were retreating from the area near the Paktia province village of Lezha, guerrilla sources said in Islamabad. The offensive became one of the bloodier campaigns of the six-year Afghan war when both sides dug in to fight for fixed positions.
