Nebraska Runs Over Illinois, 52-25

Doug DuBose rushed for 191 yards and three touchdowns, and safety Chris Carr and defensive tackle Chris Spachman each returned an interception for a score Saturday to give No. 18 Nebraska a 52-25 victory over No. 20 Illinois.

DuBose scored on a pair of one-yard runs to stake Nebraska to a 24-10 halftime lead and then ran 49 yards on the Cornhuskers’ first play of the second half to ignite a 21-point third quarter that turned the game into a rout.

Nebraska also got a 12-yard touchdown run by Von Sheppard and a nine-yard scoring pass from Travis Turner to Robb Schnitzler in the third quarter as it evened its record at 1-1. Illinois dropped to 1-2.

“We’re not a very good football team,” Illinois Coach Mike White said. “We were humiliated. We had a taste of big-time college football with USC (a 20-10 opening loss for Illinois) and Nebraska and we failed.”

Carr returned his interception 56 yards in the first quarter and Spachman returned his 38 yards in the fourth quarter for touchdowns. The Nebraska defense intercepted quarterback Jack Trudeau four times, sacked him four times and also recovered three fumbles by the Big Ten school.

DuBose, who established his career high with 191 yards in 26 carries, had 79 yards rushing by halftime as the Huskers’ ground attack totaled 197 yards by intermission. Nebraska ended with 456 yards rushing.

The Huskers added 110 yards passing on only three completions in 10 tries.

Trudeau finished 29 of 51 passing for 292 yards. David Williams had seven catches for 119 yards for the Illini.
