About 1,700 homes and businesses in Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley were without electricity briefly Tuesday when a private tree-trimming contractor caused two high-voltage power lines to touch at 8871 Swallow Lane in Fountain Valley, according to a spokesman for Southern California Edison Co.

Customers in an area bordered by Ellis Avenue on the north, Clay Avenue on the south, Bushard Street on the east and Edwards Street on the west were without power from about 1:30 to 2:09 p.m., said Jim Kennedy, Edison area manager.

Kennedy estimated that another 100 customers would be without power for up to three additional hours while repairs were made. The outage was the second in two days in the Huntington Beach area.

The previous power failure, caused by failure of a corroded electrical circuit, affected different homes and offices to the southeast, Kennedy said.
