Monte J. Newman, 54, deputy police chief of Palos Verdes Estates, was named police chief on Tuesday by the City Council. He will take over the $53,888-a-year job on Oct. 20, succeeding John E. Dollarhide, the city public safety director who also serves as police chief. Dollarhide recently announced that he will retire Dec. 30 after 32 years with the city. Newman, a San Pedro resident, has been with the Police Department since 1961.

The position of public safety director, with a salary of $55,750 a year, will be eliminated when Dollarhide leaves. He has been in charge of both the Police and Fire departments. The city is studying a proposal to contract with the Los Angeles County Fire Department for fire protection and paramedic services. A public hearing on the proposal is tentatively scheduled for Oct. 22.
