The International Track and Field Federation may reinstate Renaldo Nehemiah, world record-holder in the 110-meter hurdles, IAAF President Primo Nebiolo said in Rome.

Nehemiah was banned from track and field when he signed a professional football contract with the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League.

“There has been a general reconsideration of Nehemiah’s position over the past few weeks,” Nebiolo told the Associated Press. “The general orientation within the IAAF Council is to let him compete again soon.”

Nebiolo indicated as an example of the new IOC approach toward eligibility the decision to let the leading money-makers in professional tennis compete in the 1988 Summer Games at Seoul.

“If John McEnroe agrees to play in Seoul without being paid and without any advertising or publicity endorsement, the IOC will let him play,” Nebiolo said.
