JOFFREY LISTS FUTURE PLANS FOR L.A. STAY

A reconstruction of the original Vaslav Nijinsky choreography for “Le Sacre du Printemps” (1913) and a production of Sir Frederick Ashton’s full-length “La Fille Mal Gardee” (1960), with Stanley Holden re-creating his original role of Widow Simone, are scheduled to premiere in Los Angeles during the Joffrey Ballet’s upcoming seasons, Robert Joffrey annnounced Tuesday.

Believed lost, the Nijinksy ‘Sacre’ is being pieced together by dance historian Millicent Hodson, with art historian Kenneth Archer supervising reproduction of the Nicholas Roerich decor. The premiere will take place in fall, 1987 as part of the Los Angeles Festival.

Last seen locally six years ago in a production by San Francisco Ballet, “La Fille Mal Gardee” will be staged by Faith Worth, notator of the Royal Ballet, for the fall, 1986 Joffrey season.

In other company announcements, a new ballet to Verdi by Gerald Arpino, company associate director, is scheduled for May, 1986, as is the third work for the company by post-modern choreographer Laura Dean.

In addition, the company will bring back John Cranko’s “Romeo and Juliet” in spring, 1986--but in its own scenery and costumes, not the production rented from the Vienna State Opera Ballet which was seen in January of this year.

Originally announced for 1987, the Arpino ballet depicting Los Angeles and commissioned by Mayor Tom Bradley is now being planned for 1988 or 1989, Joffrey said, explaining that there isn’t adequate time to raise funds or commission a new score. In negotiations are new works for the company by Mark Morris and James Kudelka, plus a possible “Nutcracker” for December, 1988 to be shared by the Music Center and the Orange County Performing Arts Center.
