Local News in Brief : Design OKd for New Van Nuys Courthouse
The county Board of Supervisors Tuesday approved the design of a $47.6-million, 10-story, granite-and-glass building to replace the aging Van Nuys Municipal Courts Building.
County planners said they will advertise for bids on the project soon and hope to select a developer by December.
The building, scheduled for completion in early 1988, will include 23 courtrooms, county officials said. The existing courthouse will be demolished to make way for it. During its construction, court business will be conducted in nearby trailers, county officials said.
A helicopter landing pad is planned for the new building’s roof. There will also be offices for the court clerk, public defender, district attorney, marshal and sheriff’s personnel.
The building, designed by Daniel L. Dworsky & Associates, will be situated on more than an acre at the site of the current courthouse, 6230 Sylmar Ave. Its main entry will face the new Erwin Street Mall, county officials said.
