Governor Signs Bill Assisting Elderly
Seeking to mend his political fences with senior citizens, Gov. George Deukmejian told a group of elderly voters Tuesday that his Administration has made a major effort to help them.
In a speech to the California Senior Legislature, a taxpayer-supported lobbying group for the elderly, Deukmejian reminded the delegates that he had made up for his veto of nursing home reform legislation last year by signing a similar package in January.
Then, staging a surprise bill-signing ceremony, the governor signed a measure that will help the group raise money by allowing payers of state income tax to contribute a share of their refunds directly to the organization by checking a box on their returns.
The move drew a standing ovation from the 120 delegates of seniors, who represent an important bloc of voters because of their consistently high turnout at the polls.
Deukmejian noted that by signing the measure, he had enacted all 17 of the bills supported by the group that reached his desk this year.
