TMI’s Unit 1 Reactor Restarted
Technicians successfully restarted the undamaged reactor at Three Mile Island today, creating a self-sustaining nuclear reaction for the first time since the plant suffered the nation’s worst commercial nuclear accident 6 1/2 years ago.
A U.S. Supreme Court ruling Wednesday cleared the way for the plant’s operator, GPU Nuclear Corp., to restart Unit 1 at the plant, which has been dormant since nuclear fuel partially melted at the Unit 2 reactor. The reactor is to stay at 0.001% of power for one week, then go to 15% and reach full power in three months.
