2 Critically Injured as Car Hits Truck

A car full of migrant workers rear-ended a tractor-trailer on the Golden State Freeway near Newhall Thursday morning, injuring the six people in the car, two critically, the California Highway Patrol said.

A car driven by Gabriel Tovar, 21, whose address was not known, ran into a rig loaded with tomatoes near the Templin Highway exit at 2:40 a.m., Officer Harry Ingold said. Tovar, who suffered facial injuries and a concussion, was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving, Ingold said.

The two passengers critically injured were identified as Alfonso Ruiz, 21, of Freewater, Ore., and Guillermo Armendades, 17, address unknown. They were treated for head and chest injuries at Holy Cross Hospital in Mission Hills, then transferred to Los Angeles County-USC Hospital, a hospital spokeswoman said.
