The jury in San Diego Mayor Roger Hedgecock’s retrial on felony conspiracy and perjury charges completed its first full day of deliberations Friday night without returning a verdict. The eight-woman, four-man panel is sequestered at an undisclosed location while it ponders the allegations against Hedgecock.

The mayor faces 15 felony charges and one misdemeanor count in connection with the financing of his race for the mayor’s office in 1983. Superior Court Judge William L. Todd Jr. has encouraged the jurors to deliberate through the weekend. Jurors began their review of the evidence early Thursday afternoon.

Friday evening Todd, the respective attorneys and Hedgecock met with the judge in his courthouse chambers, but none of the parties would reveal the subject of the meeting. Hedgecock said, “It really had nothing to do with the jury deliberations,” and Deputy Dist. Atty. Charles Wickersham said only, “It’s nothing important.” Defense attorney Oscar Goodman said he could not comment on what the meeting was about.
