ON THE TOWN: If someone dangled a pair of great Bruce Springsteen tickets in front of your face, how big a fool would you make of yourself to grab ‘em? KMET-FM found out last weekend before a packed house of more than 1,000 raucous fans at the South Bay Bowl in Redondo Beach when the station gave away 10 pairs of choice tickets to Springsteen’s Monday night show at the Coliseum. The prizes went to the fans who would do the most outrageous stunt--and there were plenty of volunteers.

Winners included a pair of gals in bikinis who’d written the lyrics to “Born in the U.S.A.” on the exposed portions of their bodies; a guy who ate six raw eggs, shells and all, and a woman who sang “Trapped” in Swedish. Perhaps the biggest crowd favorite was a middle-aged gent who, dressed in a pink tutu and cowboy boots and using his false teeth as castanets, performed a tap dance and whistled “I’m on Fire” while his wife threw pies at his face.

Meanwhile, our award for the lamest coverage of the Boss’ L.A. shows goes to KNBC-TV’s David Sheehan, who weighed in on the 11 p.m. news with such a lightweight account of Springsteen’s opening-night performance that you almost had to wonder whether he bothered to even attend the show. Fans were entitled to be a little suspicious, especially since much of the footage Sheehan aired was cribbed from a month-old “NBC Nightly News” report that had aired when Springsteen began his tour back East. To add insult to injury, Sheehan also mentioned Springsteen’s local charity contributions, but was either too lazy or rushed for time to read a hot-line number for contributions over the air.
