Youth in Australia

On Lucy Izon’s column about youth travel in Australia (Sept. 15): First, beware the buspass! It’s often not as simple and convenient as it seems. My sister and brother-in-law were unable to travel from Adelaide to Alice Springs on their buspass. All seats had been booked long before they had even purchased the tickets. I’d suggest renting a car or trying the cheap new overnight bus services between major cities for about A.$39. Second, I’ve always preferred staying in youth hostels over hotel rooms. Not only do you save money, but you always seem to meet at least one fellow traveler who’s just arrived from your next destination. He’ll be full of advice on where to stay, where to eat, what to see and do there. Among the numerous hostels, both IYH and independents, is a lovely one on Magnetic Island just five miles and a $3 fare by ferry from Townsville, Queensland.
