Tunisia Guard Fires at Crowd, Killing 1; Jews Among Injured
A Tunisian security guard today opened fire on a group of people in the main business district on the island of Djerba, killing one and wounding several others “including some of the Jewish faith,” the official news agency reported.
According to the agency, Tunis Afrique Presse, the attacker “suddenly went crazy” and began shooting. The attacker was overpowered and a special security unit was investigating the incident, the agency said.
The attack came one week after Israeli aircraft destroyed the headquarters of the Palestine Liberation Organization in a Tunis suburb, killing 61 Palestinians and 12 Tunisians.
Many of Tunisia’s 5,000 Jews live on the island of Djerba, about 375 miles south of Tunis off the southern coast.
