The hit-and-run driver who killed a jogger on Twin Peaks Road in Poway on July 4 was sentenced Thursday to six months in a work furlough program.

Christopher Andrew Hooten, 18, of Rancho Bernardo surrendered his driver’s license to San Diego Municipal Judge J. Richard Haden, who imposed a $500 fine.

Hooten pleaded no contest last month to felony hit and run and misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter in the death of Navy Lt. Cmdr. Richard Larson, 44. Larson’s widow, Patricia, watched the sentencing.

She was represented by attorney Craig Woll, who asked the judge to sentence Hooten to six months in jail.

“It’s a tragedy. There’s no punishment this court can impose that can bring Lieutenant Commander Larson back,” Woll said. “This young man has killed someone. . . . For that you have to pay a price, regardless of your age.”

Hooten will work at a Rancho Bernardo service station during days, but will check into an honor camp at night during the six months, Van Orshoven said.
