The Administration, responding to congressional and public pressure, today put into effect a set of limited economic sanctions against South Africa’s white minority government.

The action capped an about-face by President Reagan, who long opposed such measures and instead favored “constructive engagement” in dealing with apartheid. The sanctions include a halt to U.S. marketing of South African gold krugerrands, a curb on bank loans to South Africa and a ban on sale of U.S. nuclear technology to that country.
