U.S. rescuers probing tons of rubble that buried a shantytown heard two taps today, indicating someone may be alive beneath the mud slide that buried about 500 people four days ago.

“If anybody is down there, tap twice,” one of the experts instructed through a special bullhorn. Moments later, two taps were heard with the aid of a special sonar device. It was the first indication of life beneath the devastated neighborhood of Mameyes since a mud slide triggered by heavy rains destroyed 275 homes early Monday.
