Ailing Sen. East Will Seek to Complete Term

WASHINGTON — Sen. John P. East (R-N.C.), who returned to his duties after a long absence because of a serious illness, said Thursday he expects to complete his term of office.
East met with reporters to discuss his recuperation from a thyroid condition and problems with his urinary tract. He decided last month not to seek reelection in 1986.
“I feel pretty well. Obviously, I’m not of the strength I was,” said East, 54. “The prognosis is very good. I would prefer to feel stronger. I have obviously felt better. I hope to overcome this.”
