John Snyder; Ex-Secretary of Treasury
John Wesley Snyder, a secretary of the Treasury during President Truman’s Administration, died Tuesday at his home on Seabrook Island, his daughter said. He was 90.
Serving under Truman between 1945 and 1953, he was involved in the Administration’s programs to help Germany and Japan rebuild after World War II.
Snyder helped develop assistance programs for France, Italy, Austria, Turkey and Greece. He also served as a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization Council from 1949 through 1953.
Federal Loan Officer
He joined the Truman Administration in 1945 as federal loan administrator and was named later that year as head of the Office of War Mobilization and Reconversion.
Snyder was appointed secretary of the Treasury in 1946 and served in that capacity until the end of the Truman Administration in 1953.
He was a founder of the Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation, which provides scholarships to college upper-division and graduate students planning careers in public service.
