Al Unser, who trails his son, Al Unser Jr., by just three points in the chase for the CART driving title, won the pole for today’s Phoenix 150 at Phoenix International Raceway.
In the process, Unser set a world record on one-mile ovals with a speed of 161.885 m.p.h. The previous mark of 155.474 m.p.h., set last year by Jacques Villenueve, was shattered by 13 drivers Saturday.
Unser also had the fastest time in morning practice at 163.273 m.p.h.
