The Region : Hairdresser Benefit Raises AIDS Funds

Share

About 500 hairdressers showed up at work throughout the Los Angeles area Sunday to tint, tease, snip and rinse in a fund-raising effort to help victims of AIDS. “The idea is showing basically that when you give one day out of your regular schedule, something happens,” said Jose Eber, who works out of a trendy Beverly Hills salon. “Everybody can do something. Six hours out of a year is nothing, but it helps.” Eber, chairman of the event, said volunteers hoped to raise at least $100,000. A total of 120 hair and nail salons from Santa Monica to Covina participated in the fund-raiser, charging $15 to 50 or more for haircuts, tints, permanents, makeup and other services. All money collected was earmarked for AIDS Project Los Angeles, a group dedicated to helping victims of the deadly disease, educating the public about AIDS and lobbying for more funding.
