Eastern is seeking some of United’s routes.

The carrier said it applied for the rights to United Airlines’ routes from Tokyo to Seattle and Portland, Ore. Eastern is eyeing the routes because of United’s proposed acquisition of Pan American World Airways’ Pacific division. Transportation Secretary Elizabeth Hanford Dole last week gave tentative approval to the purchase but said she would consider designating a new airline to replace United on the Tokyo-Pacific Northwest routes.
