GTE Corp. said its third-quarter earnings edged up 1%. Stamford, Conn.-based GTE said its third-quarter profit totaled $290 million, while its revenue rose to $3.9 billion, up about $300 million from the like 1984 quarter. GTE said its financial position was not as strong as it could have been due to operating losses at GTE Sprint, its long-distance telephone business. Excluding Sprint’s results, GTE’s operating income would have been up 22%.
