An armed man who threatened a couple outside a West Hollywood nightspot and then pointed his gun at sheriff’s deputies was shot and critically wounded by a deputy, authorities said. Walter Gutierrez, 37, was reported in critical but stable condition at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center after the confrontation outside Carlos and Charlie’s restaurant at 8240 Sunset Blvd. A sheriff’s spokeswoman said Gutierrez accosted a couple outside the restaurant and, after a shoving match, pointed a gun at them. When Deputies William Weiss and Howard Peltz approached and ordered Gutierrez to drop his weapon, the spokeswoman said, Gutierrez pointed the gun at them. Weiss, a 5 1/2-year veteran of the department, opened fire, striking Gutierrez several times, the spokeswoman said. Gutierrez was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.
