Bradley Defends Rule Barring Staff Press Statements

Mayor Tom Bradley on Friday defended an office memo that directed his staff members not to answer questions from reporters.

The memo, sent by Deputy Mayor Tom Houston last week to senior members of the mayor’s staff, said that “no one on staff is authorized to speak to the media concerning events or issues in the office or to respond to questions from the media.” Members of the staff can discuss events or issues only with “special permission” granted by Houston or Press Deputy Ali Webb, the memo said.
